Church prepares for celebration

Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church is in the midst of holy week. The church is busy setting up for morning and evening services throughout the week. On Friday, the ladies of the church decorated the “Tomb of Christ” with red and white carnations to prepare for the service, which commemorates the burial of Christ. It’s just one of many events in anticipation of the Resurrection of the Christ, which Orthodox Christians worldwide celebrate Sunday, which coincides with the end of the Jewish observance of Passover.

Kate Peroulis, left, and Billie Jacobs decorate a bier, which is a representation of the “Tomb of Christ,” on Friday at Saint John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church. During the service, an embroidered cloth will be placed inside the Bier, or portable tomb. The embroidery on the cloth represents the body of Christ.
